Biography

Josefine Opsahl is an award-winning composer and cellist - a virtuoso, visionary and rising star that renews and pushes the rich legacy of classical music forward.
She is a ‘boundary defying and remarkable composer and artist’ (The Strad (UK)) whose refined compositions and strong concepts ties new,
groundbreaking bonds between aesthetics, genres, environments and people.
Her artistry presents a fresh, contemporary synthesis between tradition and the sounds and reality of today that transcends old barriers and let the music freely express and project in diverse musical environments. Elaborating on her background in classical music, Josefine Opsahl integrates contemporary medias of expression such as electronics into her music resulting in powerful, orchestral sonic worlds and ‘a truly original and contemporary expression that is remarkable for Josefine’s young age’ - stated by HM King of Denmark.
Being both an excellent musician and performer, Josefine Opsahl creates music and live performances with a direct and deep impact that has touched, opened and conquered new
ears, eyes and hearts of audiences all over the world. She has received numerous awards for her music – latest The Danish Arts Foundation’s Honorary Work Grant, The Crown Prince Couple’s Cultural Stardust Award, the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize and Wilhelm Hansen Foundation‘s Scholarship of Honor.

Josefine Opsahl is teaching advanced postgraduate students at the The National Academy of Music (DK) and has given lectures in Shanghai, at Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm (SE), The Royal Danish Academy of Music and The Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and The University of Copenhagen (DK). She studied classical and contemporary cello playing at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (DK) and Northwestern University (IL, USA) and holds an Advanced Postgraduate Soloist degree within Contemporary Creative Art.
